Circus Photo Contest Winners Announced

Fédération Mondiale du Cirque Competition Draws Entries from 13 Countries

7 December 2009, Monte-Carlo, Monaco – The Fédération Mondiale du Cirque (Fédération) today announced the winners of its First Annual Circus Photo Contest. Ron Mikkenie of Huizen, The Netherlands won the “best of show” in color photography with his photo of a leaping tiger from the German Probst Circus. Janeric Dahlin of Tibro, Sweden won the “best of show” in black & white photography with a photo of clown Oleg Popov performing in Circus Benneweis. Dahlin was also a finalist in multiple photo categories, as were Roy and Linda Himsel of Sweden and Oliver Stegmann of Switzerland.

The two “best of show” photos were selected by the Fédération’s Honorary President H.S.H. Princess Stephanie of Monaco from a group of finalist photos in four categories – circus performance, circus life, youth circus and performing animals. The color and black and white winning entries will become cover photographs for European-style and American-style 2010 calendars respectively, and each finalist photo will be presented on individual month. The calendars can be ordered at www.circusfederation.org. Winning photos also will be displayed in Monte-Carlo from 14-16 January, 2010 in conjunction with the 34^th Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo.

Ron Mikkenie, 45, was 16 when he saw his first circus and later learned that a great uncle had been a circus owner after World War II. He combined his love of photography with his passion for the circus, and began taking photographs at circus performances. “My good contacts with circus directors and performers made it possible to take photos in a unique way,” he said. An electronics engineer in high-tech imaging systems, Mikkenie also writes pro-circus animal articles for newspapers and online, as well as maintaining a circus-related website that keeps the Dutch Congress informed about the care and welfare animals receive in Dutch circuses (www.klassiekcircus.nl). His winning photo, taken in August 2009, captured a tiger in mid-leap from the Rudiger Probst tiger act and will be the cover of the calendar featuring color photos.

Janeric Dahlin, 69, is now retired after a career in the hardwood business. He learned how to use a camera as a youngster, started developing his own black and white photographs, and has spent a lifetime chronicling the circus. He served as chairman of the board of the Swedish Circus Academy from 1981-83. “With my camera I have tried to show what happens in the fantastic world of circus and how hard people work to keep the circus alive,” he said. His winning photograph was taken in 1981 in Copenhagen during a performance by the famous Russian clown Oleg Popov. It will be featured on the cover of the calendar featuring black and white photos.

The worldwide photo competition, held from June 22 – October 31, 2009, drew entries from Argentina, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, India, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The selection of finalist photos was determined by an international jury of circus historians comprised of Julio Revolledo Cardenas (Mexico), Charles Ricketts (South Africa), Arthur Hofmeester (The Netherlands), Mark St. Leon (Australia), Pascal Jacob (France), Antonio Giarola (Italy), Greg Parkinson (United States) and Rodney Huey (United States).

The Fédération Mondiale du Cirque (FMC) was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Monte-Carlo under the patronage of H.S.H. Princess Stephanie of Monaco. The goal of the FMC is to promote circus arts and culture worldwide, to support the circus through proprietary projects, to serve as a voice for the circus community and to represent circus interests to international organizations. Its six founding members are the Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo, the European Circus Association, the Outdoor Amusement Business Association in the United States, the Circus Federation of Australia, the Animal Interest Alliance in South Africa, and the Canadian organization En Piste.

So I'm thinking how could taiko drummers captivate an audience for over an hour? I mean, there's only so many beats. Little did I know there were so many types of drums, ways of drumming and comedy really is all about timing and beats.

Not only did they captivate, they left the audience standing and stomping and wanting more.

Attending the before show discussion given by UF's marching band director we were introduced to the grueling physicality and group mindset that makes this an amazing performance. Morning jogs and 6-hour rehearsals sequestered in the mountains of Japan are obviously a great part of this group Borg beat. That and girls with guns. The group is equally made up of females rising to the occasion and grandly enjoying the making of noise.

Reflecting upon the tremendous amount of focus and ego-less precision needed to pull this off amazed me all the more. That 10 people could remain in sync for over an hour, pounding their collective hearts out, and yet pulling back to quieter, charming, comedic moments left me wondering anew. When playing a mind blowing solo the support and encouragement from the rest of the group was palpable. Why don't we see more of this? The combined exchange of energy I witnessed created a greater whole. A give and take literally between beats, at one point a face off even. All done playfully, yet precisely, and cooperatively reaching a crescendo engulfing the entire audience with bone-shuddering beats, then pulsing fresh energy right back into us. We left cleansed and refreshed. I thought "Wow! Those performers were playing their best together and having fun! And leaving us all the better for having enjoyed it."

You, as my perceived expert, are probably well aware of the controversy surrounding the topic of performing circus animals world wide. Entire countries have banned performing animals, dozens of British Columbian municipalities have placed restrictions on the industry, and numerous communities in the US even, won't allow the circus to operate in their locale. I have never been to a circus myself. Not as a supporter nor as a protester. I do hear indirectly that many trainers (hopefully yourself included!) feel that these bans and concerns are unwarranted. And only you know the reality of what you and the animals you train, care for, and perform with go through every day. Only you know know their health, their enrichment, and their challenges. You, better than anyone know how budgets might affect your choice in care methods, supplies, tools or time. Only you know the character of other trainers and circus management.

Would you be open to me asking you some questions about your experience training animals and performing with them in the Circus? My focus would be to discover how it feels to be a trainer responding to the controversy, to hear the good stories and the rough stories about living with captive wildlife on the road, and to find out, in your expert opinion, where what the real risks lie for performing circus animals and what you would do to improve your industry for everyone.

Yes, conflict sells, but diplomacy inspires change. It's not good journalism to present only one extreme point of view from either side, but rather to discover where even opposite views can see each other's perspective.

I wish to convey your intelligence and experience as an Animal Trainer in a way that would make an otherwise closed-minded burn-the-circus extremist consider that there is hope to work with instead of against. Pink Takes Flight

I suppose it depends on the body wearing it.

In this case, Pink, is looking pretty buff from her aerial workouts and deservedly wears it well. Here's some pics and video of her cradle act as performed on the MTV awards.

She does a very nice job, pointed toes, catches and all while singing.

I guess it's not enough nowadays to simply sing. In order to hold people's attention you have to risk life and limb, or at least appear to, as well. Seems to be a trend going on here. I suppose it comes with being a type "T" as in Thrills personality. Better the thrill of an aerial workout than drugs and alcohol.

The Brittany Spears Circus Tour

The Universe works in mysterious ways. Things fell into place, on my birthday no less, and I had the great fortune to get the VIP treatment at the Brittany Spears concert in Orlando, Sept. 1st. Arriving early we were cordially greeted and escorted up to a catered area decorated with gorgeous circus costumes and huge Big Apple Circus posters. ʻMighty Mikeʼ DJʼd the affair and other dancers and circus performers mingled and posed for pics. Everyone was very kind and accommodating creating a welcoming feel and offering a glimpse into their world. From there we were shuttled down in the elevator for a backstage tour into a maze of hallways ﬁlled to the brim with boxes and props, neatly organized and labeled. The logistics are a masterpiece in themselves. As we were led past catering, through a dressing room, makeup room and my favorite, the wardrobe area, it had the feel of a side show as the curtains were pulled aside and we stared into their world. The performers and tech people we came across were all calm and friendly as we invaded their space. The unsung heros of the show, the riggers in their harnesses, sheepishly grinned and laughed with us at jokes made by our genial tour guide, Mike, getting their own 15 seconds of fame and taking us gawking bystanders in stride.

From there we were led onto the arena ﬂoor and got a peek under the stage at the tightly organized quick change area. The stage itself is a star, and a mechanical and engineering marvel innovatively designed so that every seat in the house gets a front-on view at moments throughout the show. A large ramp leads up to the ﬁrst of three elevated rings. One large center ring with two smaller end rings on either side. A center elevator in each end ring and 7, count them 7, elevator trap doors in the center ring itself. Throughout the show performers pop up and descend making entrances and exits very clean and simple. They must be running around like moles under there.

Above the center ring is an aerialistsʼ dream circular rigging containing all manner of winches, cables and tracks so that descents and various props and aerial apparatuses can be moved up, down, spin, and circle around. These were used to their fullest effect throughout the show with drops, lyras, silks, cord, and the center descent of Brittany herself.

An LED drape encircled the rigging and it, too, could raise and lower while acting as a projection screen throughout making time for set changes behind it. Music video clips were seamlessly played driving the show along with close-up live camera shots so that even when the action was facing away from you, you had a view from the front. It was all very cleanly edited and didnʼt overwhelm but rather enhanced the experience and carried out each songsʼ theme to the hilt.

The show starts with a performance by Big Apple Circus performers doing trampoline, juggling cube, German gym wheel, hula hoops and clown bits from one end to the other, top caliber circus acts picking up the energy until the reveal of Brittany herself. Stunning without being overly dramatic, Brittany is a consummate performer, her skill levels on par with every other type of performer onstage. She led the dancers in tight choreography, teasingly and suggestively presented without being vulgar. She appeared and disappeared in magic props and was frighteningly lifted in aerial juxtapositions. This girl has got nerve and the strength to pull it off. All done gracefully with a smile on her face.

I was most impressed with her ability to walk, a pleasing combination of a stroll and a strut. As simple as it sounds, I know from experience how difﬁcult it is, she moved from ring to ring, up and down stairs, the toughest to pull off, with perfect aplomb while singing and keeping the audience in her gaze. Again the logistics and complicated choreography and staging was pulled off seamlessly without a hitch. I was impressed with how easy it all felt.

Although from my close view I did notice a hole in her ﬁshnets, clue to the fact that at some point she did get caught up. From my own circus experience I know how this can happen and the moment of sheer terror when it does, until the tights give way, not easily at that. Welcome, Brittany, to the tribe of Circus Girls!

The costuming was ﬂattering and shiny, sexy yet functional, and contributed greatly to the appeal. The performers were multi-talented and spot on, each having an individual personality at times and lock step group movements as well. It takes a generous and conﬁdent performer to share the stage with others so talented and tons of hard work to make it look so smooth and real.

This show had the feel of a Las Vegas extravaganza on wheels. I applaud all the talent and vision, cooperation and precision, it took to pull it off.

Knowing bits of her backstory and personal challenges I was moved by the fact that she has managed to clean up her act and strict policies exist to ward off the evils of substance use by every single member of the crew. Hopefully this is a sign of the times and the gloriﬁcation of rock ʻn roll substance excess, and its tragic consequences on talented performers, will fade into the past. As I looked into the huge mixed crowd of young girls with their moms, couples and gay men, I could only hope, that lives will be saved and enhanced by the disciplined beauty and strength of this awesome show.

Wildlife Safari - Winston, OR

A wildlife safari in Oregon has come up with an unusual way to raise money in the tough economic climate.

For $20, visitors can have their car washed by the zoo's elephants, who scrub with sponges and rinse with their trunks.

Wildlife Safari Executive Director, Dan Van Slyke, and Elephant Supervisor, Carol Matthews, claim that the elephants don't mind the work, and that the fundraiser has been a hit.

Willie Nelson, busted 3 years ago for pot and mushrooms, was performing at age 76 to a huge mixed-age crowd. Starting promptly at 7:30 he sped through song after song, seemingly challenging the band to keep up with him. With nary a word to the audience between songs he was like a musical parody of himself. Don't know if he was on auto pilot or just in the groove and playing through. For those of us in the higher rows, having bought "best available" seats, only to notice that the next section over was closed and totally empty 25 rows closer, my ears hurt from the higher pitches and my eyes failed to see much really. He was just a small figure on the stage and the huge projection screens weren't being used. We were told that Bob Dylan nixed them saying, "This is a live concert, not television." Have to wonder if he just didn't want anyone to see him close up. Or at all really as when he took the stage the lighting was dimmed and shadowy. Dylan's voice failed him but his band was tight and well dressed complete with hats. They played separate sets and we wondered if Willie wasn't making a poke at Bob in one of his songs. Couldn't understand the lyrics well enough to tell.

I had to wonder what happened to these two renegade guys that used to go to bat for the working class. Counting seats and looking around my quick math figured there was at least 1.5 million dollars in the seats, not counting t-shirt and souvenir sales. I was sadly disappointed. On a scale of Lynn I give it a 2 at best. Willie, Bob, what are you thinking? Not a word to the audience? No, really, I'd like to know. I wouldn't encourage anyone to go until the Marcus Amphitheater improves the sound system and uses the projections screens for those of us having still paid a generous sum but sitting in the peanut gallery.

Archer, FL, population 1302, celebrates people!

David Yulee, was an imaginative entrepreneur, wily politician, brilliant orator, and man of great charm and charisma. FL's first US Senator.

Bo Diddley, born Ellas Otha Bates, was an original and influential American rock & roll singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was known as "The Originator" because of his key role in the transition from blues music to rock & roll. As Tom Petty says, "Elvis was King, but Diddley his Daddy."

Both lived in Archer.

A local couple has refurbished their home into the U.S. Victory Museum from donated artifacts including seldom seen health posters. Civil War Reenactors also participate.

Proof positive PEACE and LOVE are the only answer and we CAN all get along.

I live in Archer and am looking forward to this. I ran into Bo at the airport on occasion and am I glad I had the nerve to chat him up. He was the nicest guy and when asked what advice he would give to fellow musicians he encourged them to follow their own muse and do it their own way. Worked for him.

Diddley was incredibly visible and involved in the Archer community during his lifetime said Faith Fusillo, Diddley's former business manager who now helps oversee part of his estate. If an organization needed help raising money, Diddley would be there with a guitar and amp, ready to perform, she added.

"He was a very common man. Bo wasn't about limousines and tuxedos, he was more about tractors and overalls," she said.

Fusillo likens the memorabilia exhibition to a mini-Graceland. It includes some of Diddley's stage costumes, a guitar he used up until his last performances, his leather cowboy hat and many awards, including his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Diddley's estate managers had countless offers to display his memorabilia in large cities, but waited for the opportunity to show it in Archer because of Diddley's connection to the area, Fusillo said.

"Bo lived and died in Archer," she said. "He traveled the world, but always chose to come home to Archer."

Clowns Give New Meaning to White Face

Here’s an excellent example of pwnage: when the white supremacist group VNN Vanguard Nazi/KKK tried to host a hate rally in Knoxville, Tennessee, they were foiled by … clowns!

“White Power!” the Nazi’s shouted,
“White Flour?” the clowns yelled back running in circles throwing flour in the air and raising separate letters which spelled “White Flour”.

“White Power!” the Nazi’s angrily shouted once more,
“White flowers?” the clowns cheers and threw white flowers in the air and danced about merrily.

“White Power!” the Nazi’s tried once again in a doomed and somewhat funny attempt to clarify their message,
“ohhhhhh!” the clowns yelled
“Tight Shower!” and held a solar shower in the air and all tried to crowd under to get clean as per the Klan’s directions.

At this point several of the Nazi’s and Klan members began clutching their hearts as if they were about to have a heart attack. Their beady eyes bulged, and the veins in their tiny narrow foreheads beat in rage. One last time they screamed
“White Power!”

The clown women thought they finally understood what the Klan was trying to say. “Ohhhhh…” the women clowns said. “Now we understand…”,
“WIFE POWER!” they lifted the letters up in the air, grabbed the nearest male clowns and lifted them in their arms and ran about merrily chanting

Why some prefer the hardships of showbiz on the road to normal life.

As they lived among sword-swallowers and fire-eaters from the only remaining traveling circus sideshow in the U.S., photographers Jimmy and Dena Katz wondered: Why would a young person sign up for a dying profession, one that brings in little money and lots of grime?

"There is this old-fashioned appeal of running away with the circus," says Dena. "But it was so tough day-to-day. Living in a trailer, charging $2 or $3 per show. There was nothing romantic or glamorous about it."

A powerful escape fantasy may be more difficult to shake than the grit of life on the road. "Carnivals and circuses attract that element in the psyche that craves symbolic and dreamlike experiences," says Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul. "When work, facts, and literal issues are our main focus, we have a desperate need for liberation. Why else do we sit and watch television for hours?"

But isn't living out an escape fantasy, rather than occasionally thinking about it, generally a bad choice? "Just as people with little money will purchase a fancy television set, so a person drawn to the carnival will undergo hardship to attain their goal," says Moore. "It's largely an unconscious goal, which makes it difficult to weave into ordinary life. Because it is a rejection of normal limits, it has a certain mad quality."

Maybe madness simply trumps reason for restless types who are stifled by conventional jobs. "Some of them told me that when they were away from the circus and suddenly smelled diesel fumes or burnt tires, they would desperately miss it and want to join up again," Dena says. Jimmy recalls that he told one performer that life in the troupe seemed hard. "The guy replied, 'All life is hard.' " Might as well put on a show.

The collaborators of Stand Up Eight appeared on Canada's reality television show Dragon's Den last October, winning a quarter of a million dollars to stage their dream circus. "Every performer in Stand Up Eight is already a successful entertainer in their own right", says Allison Williams, director of the project and founder of Aerial Angels, a circus arts company based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Each of us has stories to tell about why and how we do what we do, and we're all ready to create something big and beautiful."

Stand Up Eight premieres in Dekalb, Illinois in order to work with Tracy Nunnally, leader of Halls Flying FX and a giant in the stunt flying world. Nunnally is working closely with the show's creators to develop a flight act never before seen in a circus or theatre production. Right now, it's still top secret "but you've never seen anything like this. Personally, it's a tremendous challenge and a lot of fun to create something this different", says Nunnally.

The original show was a two-person show starring the Owner of the company Todd Zimmerman. We took a look at the tape and basically kept the structure of the show but re-wrote the entire thing bit by bit. It was "written" by the three of us. "Written" meaning we talked through bits then worked through them. Nothing was ever put down on paper.

The three of us are Todd Zimmerman, Terrance Yip, and Myself.

The Longshoremen perform out at Seaworld 7 days a week doing 5 shows a day. The Longshoremen have 8 to 9 shows in our repertoire but we usually stick to 3 different shows during our five show days. I think they are a lot of fun. I've grown up watching and loving the 3 Stooges, so it's a thrill to be able to write bits that remind me of them.

Tim and I were great friends for twenty years and were married in 2000 for eight and a half more. Tim loved his job, performers and the circus. He would talk to performers late into the night to really learn about them and what made them who they are, he was also known to go out of his way to help them out with whatever they might need, above and beyond the scope of his job. His favorite part was negotiating contracts and any of you that had the pleasure of negotiating with him know what I mean! We even negotiated at home, he couldn't get enough of that! He once told me that he wanted to be the "ultimate employee". No one can argue the fact that he certainly was. Tim was quite well known around the world. When we traveled together anywhere someone always knew him. Tim wanted to write a book about his travels in his retirement and would keep a journal on all his trips to all parts of the world. He was also interested in pursuing a masters degree. Tim spoke several languages and had an incredible memory for names and details. Our friend Roiter was with him when he took ill initially in Brazil. Tim and I spoke on the phone from his hospital room and I will be forever thankful for our last conversation. The circus world has lost a great man and a great historian and those close to him have lost a great friend.

I went to Sarasota on Sunday to share memories of the life of Tim Holst. For those of you unable to make it, here is my recollection. Circus family is unlike any other I know of. I always feel honored to be a part of it. Thank you to everyone that put this together and spoke on his behalf for all of us. Our condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life

Keith Greene, Kenny Cubicciotti and Dave Holmes - Played heartfelt music in Tim's honor. Keith later said it was the toughest show he'd ever played. Thank you Keith and band, for live music played so touchingly.

Welcome and Invocation
David Kiser
As David welcomed me at the door I glanced over his shoulder as we hugged. There, on a screen, was a slide show of Tim. After having tended to my mundane life's needs and a 3 hour drive, the reality of this gathering suddenly hit me. I was thankful I had a shoulder to cry on. Thank you David Kiser for that and being brave enough to stand before us and tell those stories barely holding it together so the rest of us could let go. You have some mighty big shoes to fill, I wish you well. In the spirit of Tim, let me know if there's ever anything I can do to help.

Reflections
Adrienne Holst - Stepped up to the podium with her bursting file of papers remarking that she was following in Tim's footsteps. Her voice cracked as she spoke eloquently of her father. Many remarked how much she bore his resemblance.
Sad she lost her father at such a young age as she related that she was just beginning to understand him.

Kenneth Feld - Told light-hearted stories of Tim the friend, associate, business partner and fellow adventurer as they worked and traveled together for over 30 odd years. Some of them odder than others. From the 8-fingered alligator trainer to first-ever bowling in China, I would imagine Kenneth will miss Tim more than most. The stories he told were entertaining and painted a vivid picture of Tim, his unique idiosyncrasies and droll sense of humor in any situation.

A short video was shown of clips of Tim ringmastering and interacting in his unique way. My favorite was the bit at the end where he was explaining "weigh day" and "pay day" to us dancers. A delicate and oft times disturbing weekly ritual for some, Tim handled it with aplomb and a much needed sense of humor.

Jim Ragona - Told of the honor he felt carrying Tim's luggage and his adventures in retrieving Zusha the Blood Sweating Nile Hippo from Russia under Tim's guidance.

Steve Smith - Couldn't speak up fast enough in clown alley when an understudy for the Ringmaster was asked for. Tim did pipe up in his baritone voice and got the chance. Steve and Tim went on to have a lifelong friendship.

Peggy Williams - Related Tim's invitation to adventure on Kaleidoscape which upon arrival turned out to be "Doniker Designer"

Emails received from around the world were read, each shedding light on the immense number of people Tim, and in turn the circus, had touched worldwide.

Afterwards light snacks were served and jackpots cut up. Sadly many of us only see each other at these occasions. Happier moments need to be shared. I've never seen so many well-dressed clowns behaving themselves. Such was the effect of the "inTimidator" as I fondly referred to him. He said himself in his resume his 'job' was to make everyone on the circus 'happy.' Tough job indeed. Thank you, Mr. Tim.

First there was this. . .

I don't know why they call it a cute appendicitis?

I won't bore you with details. Suffice to say the ER really needs to rethink customer care and compassion. How about 1/2 the flourescent lights, ditch the frickin' TV and play soft music. Soothing, people, we need soothing when we're illin'. And how about chairs that recline? I would have been much more comfortable waiting the 3 hours if I wasn't huddled under a blanket on a steel chair. Geez. It's not rocket science.
Call me and I won't charge much for a consult.

So today is day 4 post op and I'm gardening and such when what do I see?

A coral snake slithering across the lawn. No problem usually because they are quite shy and quick to run away, but the cat was just a foot away and what could be more fun than playing with a snake? The "brudders" as I fondly call them, are the two male cats we got as kittens well over a year ago to help with the rat infestation. Yeah, woods rats. Chewing the insulation off the wiring in Stan the van, making a nest in the rigging box and living it up in the giant puppets in the garage, er studio. Rather than poisons we figured cats would do. Well, a year and destroyed home later, (Whoopie! Curtains to climb! Yeehaw! Sofas to shred! Yowza! Toilet paper rolls! Weeee!) we've finally gotten them fixed and let them outside today. What fun they were having until I spied the coral snake approaching. So I sauntered up between the cat and the snake while talking on the phone to my mother in Wisconsin, "Yeah mom, it's red to yellow, kill a fellow, no I'm not going to kill it, it's only about 2 foot long, it'll be fine, yeah, I'm sure it's not a garder snake, " and sure enough the snake slithered the other way under the shrubs and the propane tank. Luckily the cat didn't notice. Whew! Mother Nature is in your face here in Florida. When you look down at the ground, it moves. No matter how many chemicals they spray, powder, bait, and traps they set, pest control is a misnomer.

Bay Area Renaissance Festival

Looking to spend some time outside under a treed canopy surrounded by artistry, clever costuming and some great live entertainment?

Head to the Bay Area Renaissance Festival in Tampa, weekends until April 5th. I especially enjoyed the Demzarrah Gypsies, gorgeous girls, colorful flowing skirts and aurora borealis rhinestones. I missed the Bunnies in Peril magic show at Hoggetowne but was glad I got to catch it here. The Dragon Scales & Fairy Tales show really engaged the kids and I loved the sassy dragon. Having never seen a stage hypnotist before, I was amazed and in stitches at the same time by Lady Mesmer. Goes to show how suggestive we are. Also the flamenco bolo stylings of Manolete in his Glory & Death show. Not one afraid to make a fool of himself, this guy is hot in more ways than one.

That's right folks, "Step right up for the chocolate dipped bacon!" Fair food is the best food you'll find once a year, and everything can be fried. Had a lovely time and the weather was awesome. First stop the WELDES BIG BEAR SHOW getting an up close peek at this cute family and their commitment to animals of the furry kind. Next the HAAI LIVE SHARK ENCOUNTER presented by Phillip Peters, friend from Ringling back in the day. He's quite the comedian and engages the crowd with his personality, playing on our fears keeping peeps on the edge of their seats while slipping in interesting facts about sharks and their habits. Altogether a great way to encourage understanding and thus respect and responsibility for them, both captive and ocean side.
It was a packed house at CIRCUS HOLLYWOOD next. A fine free show in a tent, a bit warm for everyone, but the acts were hot. I especially liked the horses and silks done beautifully.

Altogether a fun day at the fair. It's over for now, try to catch it next year.

Many moons ago when I was living in California, Kay Rosaire stopped by on her travels and spoke of her dream. Sunday I had the pleasure of experiencing its fruition. A 9th generation circus animal trainer, Kay, and her family are living proof of the possibilities of a human-animal bond. I once went to the zoo with her sister Pam and brother-in-law Roger, chimp trainers, and witnessed their ability to communicate with the chimp captives there. As Pam vocalized, the zoo chimps came closer and started hooting and hollering. She obviously knew their language. I was stunned to say the least.

Their story is told in this documentary and gives hope to the power of truth and family.

Sunday I went to Kay Rosaire's Big Cat Habitat and Sanctuary for their annual fundraising show under the big top. More than once I was moved to tears. The thought that people like this are being legislated, bad mouthed and put out of business by highly organized, well-to-do people that place their doggies in daycare, makes me wonder what the heck are we coming to? We've cemented over all the formerly grassy lots that provided a softer, more natural circus tent setting appropriate for animal acts. Soleil pours asphalt on their lots to provide a sanitized version of a circus experience. These are down-to-earth, get your hands dirty people, that live and breathe animals. And they themselves are going extinct.

One after the other each family member shared with the audience their well-loved and cared for animals and countless hours of training. Training is simply time spent with animals and they live with their animals 24/7. Without the special effects and production values of a Cirque show, the audience was drawn into the warmth and obvious two-way communication. Bears, tigers, dogs, chimps, goats, camels, horses, and an elephant were featured in the hour and forty-five minute educational show.

Funny thing, when I go see Soleil I miss that special bond and energy from great animal acts. Although I love juggling, aerial and acrobatic acts, I didn't miss human acts when I saw this show. The variation of animals covered all the bases for me. As Kay exhorted several times during the show, "Spend quality time with your pets, teach them tricks and give them a job to do. It stimulates their brains and helps them bond with you." It was like a Dr. Doolittle dream come true.

On a scale of Lynn, this is a MUST see.

Lilly Ledbetter (Jacksonville, AL) Ledbetter was the plaintiff in the American employment discrimination case Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Ledbetter worked at the Goodyear plant in Gadsden, AL for nearly 20 years before she learned her male co-workers were paid more for the same work. She filed suit, and a federal court jury awarded her nearly $4 million. However, in 2007, the US Supreme Court said the 180-day window to file her case had closed years before, after the first unfair paycheck, even though she had no knowledge of the pay disparity between her and her male co-workers. On January 29, 2009 the President signed his first bill in office; the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which makes each unfair paycheck an act of discrimination, and thus reopens the 180-day window for filing a court case. In signing this bill the President upheld one of this nation's founding principles: that we are all created equal, and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness.

Ty'Sheoma Bethea, Student (Dillon, SC) Bethea is an eighth grader at JV Martin Junior High School in Dillon, SC. Upon hearing the President mention her school’s crumbling facility built in the 1800's during the first presidential news conference on February 9, 2009, she wanted to do something to help her school. After school hours, she walked to the public library to gain access to a computer and composed a poignant letter to Congress asking for help. Her principal, Amanda Burnette, promised to pass along the letter to Congress and the President in hopes that the students of JV Martin Junior High School can realize their dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, and lawmakers. Bethea will be accompanied by her mother, Dina Leach.

Phillipe Petit, the French tightrope walker from “Man on Wire” — which won for best documentary feature — walked into the ceremony on the carpet and said, “I haven’t been looking at the red carpet, I’ve been looking above and thinking of what it would be like to be on a wire above all this.”

Funny that. I'm always looking at ceilings and wondering how cool it would look to rig. Guessing I'll have to set my sites higher.

The Cast of Aerial Alchemy 2009

Although the mornings were cold and frosty, it warmed up quite nicely. We "wet" the appetite of the masses doing 4 shows a day featuring Kyle doing magic, Clay with his plate spinning, Jason on silks, Priti dancing, web and tumbling, joining Jason with fire poi. Jermaine danced and lept, Dan dove through fire, literally. Elise was the beautiful Queen of the Trapeze. Throughout it all Joe played and sang accompanied by Robert or Shen.

Oodles of thanks to everyone that helped in any way. Esp. Sophie and her Mom for keeping us fed. And Jess and Robin for bringing things forgotten.

It was, so far, the best year yet, we left beauty in our wake and reminded folks, "Art is not a luxury, it's an everyday event."

A trip to Sarasota Showfolks Circus Swap Meet and look what we found!

"Mr. Red" was revived with a little TLC and does a great Rudolph impersonation. As for Elise and Lynn - um would that be Transequine? Transpecies? Drag reindeer? Just plain silly? Much better quality - whoot - as we test out the new camera. The editing software bogs the computer a bit, once again a learning curve driving me in circles, but patience and a heck with it attitude got us through. Hope you have fun watching it. The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations, first published in 2004, is a book written by James Surowiecki about the aggregation of information in groups, resulting in decisions that, he argues, are often better than could have been made by any single member of the group.

According to Surowiecki, these key criteria separate wise crowds from irrational ones:

Diversity of opinion: Each person should have private information even if it's just an eccentric interpretation of the known facts.
Independence: People's opinions aren't determined by the opinions of those around them.

Britney Spears new video is targeted by Peta for the use of elephants and lions. Personally I wondered why it took them so long to drop their press release. I suppose they were waiting for maximum effect. Kari Johnson, elephant owner, states,

"My husband, Gary, and I do indeed have a long history with elephants. Our love of and infatuation with elephants started for both of us in our teens, 37 years ago. To say we care about elephant welfare is an understatement," Kari Johnson wrote in a statement to MTV News. "Have Trunk Will Travel has never issued a written endorsement, nor does it condone using electrical devices to discipline and control elephants except in situations where elephant or human safety is at risk. PETA very conveniently used a sentence out of context from a USDA request for public comments regarding policies on elephants in 2000."

Johnson went on to write that the elephants used in Spears' "Circus" video were supervised by a representative from the American Humane Association the entire time they were on set and that the elephants were treated kindly.

"The American Humane Association monitors animal action in film and television. A representative was on the set of the Britney Spears 'Circus' video with our elephants, Tai and Kitty, to ensure their safety and welfare," Johnson wrote. "Britney, the director, producers and the entire crew were respectful of the elephants' needs and comfort and a pleasure to work with."

I've known Kari and Gary for over 20 years. This summer I was present at a shoot with Tai for T Pain. Their elephants are pampered and well cared for. They work 24/7 caring for them. Always have.

Next up, "How to smuggle an elephant."

Seems the guard at the border loves the World Cup and for a price will look the other way. The elephants are headed to Thailand to work in the tourist trekking business. Nowadays even an elephant needs to work in order to eat. They've taken part in the decimation of their own forests and are unemployed. Their tusks and body parts are readily available for purchase as well.

In Sri Lanka tourists can visit the Elephant Orphanage, described as paradise.

Notice the large number of captive elephants being ably cared for by the mahouts.

In India " elephants are dying in ever-greater numbers as industrialization, deforestation, the pressure of human settlement and shrinking food resources cut into their numbers."

However this blog tells the story of a live elephant interaction in India in a humorous way.

I had the great pleasure of working with Ron And Joy on Royal Hanneford and at The Crossroads in Wisconsin Dells.

I was inspired by their creativity, attention to detail and compassionate care of their animals. They included a rider in their contract that stated if they witnessed any animal mistreatment by others on the show they would be released from their performances and paid in full. I admired their commitment to the highest standards of animal care and training. That and Ron was the first to dye my hair. I haven't seen its natural color since.

Now to find someone with HBO reception. . .

San Francisco, Circus City?

LOVE, CHAOS, DINNER

Life has a way of going in circles. I found myself once again in San Francisco, birthplace of my circus adventures. This time, however, there was a very polished, artful show in place at the pier. Teatro ZinZanni is a relative of the Pomp, Duck, and Circumstance show seen years ago in NYC. Presented in a beautiful spiegeltent, worth the price of admission itself, European style cabaret, melodrama, variety show, plus gourmet dinner. What more could you ask for? Oh, and the costumes are to die for. Chef Caesar, played by Frank Ferrante, is a remarkably quick-witted improvisationalist with audience members. I loved the challenge of keeping up to him. Ukrainian contortionist Vita Radionova moved beautifully, not once did I wince although she twisted herself unimaginably, yet seemingly effortlessly. Andrew Adams and Erika Gilfether paired passion and aerial dare devildry into a lovely mixture. Duo Manducas brought things down to earth with their hilarious handbalancing antics and comedic takes. And throughout the show, Les Petits Frères (Gregory Marquet, Mickael Bajazet, Domitil Aillot) bumbled about in character, then left us dumbfounded with their acrobatic finesse.
On a scale of Lynn, it's a GO!

Lucky for me I was close to the border Friday morning. The Mexican TV station broadcast the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies live from start to finish - without one single commercial. Later I watched the NBC version which chopped up the brilliant vision with crass American commercial breaks. Buy, buy, buy, without a thought of the artful story being told, the value of witnessing its historical importance, the beauty as it was meant to be seen as a whole. Nope, NBC has no artistic credibility, only money, money, money. What was I thinking?

The numbers alone are mind numbing:

The vision of director, Zhang Yimou, whose films were once banned in China, is a beautiful, artistically moving testament to the power of chi.

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- "I regret many things, many details of this performance, many things that I could have done better," said Zhang Yimou, director of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, at a press conference here on Saturday.

After planning and carrying out a spectacular event that reflected the ancient and modern images of China to the world, Zhang remained humble and reflective.

"For example, there are performers who were injured. I blame myself for that. It might well have been avoided if I had given more detailed instructions," he said.

"We had many difficulties. I do not like complaining, but sometimes there are obstacles you can not overcome, that you and your team have to face," he said. "What everyone cares about is the final result. We all know this, so we don't explain."

Sharply contrasting the elegance and mirror-perfect choreography, the entrance of the athletes carrying cameras and cellphones was a bit jolting, but their excitement and exuberance was nearly palpable through the TV screen.

Better we compete through artistic imagery and playing games than weaponry IMHO.

Sean Emery proves Circus Hurts

We toured the US with GSOE refining our circus chops. He married my bff Megan and they moved to NYC. Sean has expanded his hilarious comedy variety routine, traveled the world, works hard and plays harder at his home base of Minneapolis, MN. His self deprecating humor, absurd observations and mad skills make me weak with laughter. Like Robin Williams and Jim Carrey crashing headlong into the circus. Check out this vid as he attempts to upgrade his unicycle prowess. As if it could get any better. Warning: You could die laughing, or cry wincing.

Circo Atayde in LA

Presented in the former Big Apple Circus tent, this Mexican circus is hovering around LA and playing empty lots. It recently acquired the Atayde name. I caught an 8:30, well 9:00pm show by the time it started. The house was barely half full, but the audience was 100% involved. I give this show the award for most creative use of holographic sequin material and fancy costumes on dancing girls. Huge feather headdresses, high heels and fishnet stockings. WHoo Hoo!!! Handsome fit Latin men. Oh, yeah!!! The clowns did the most "butt-touching" dead or alive gag I've ever seen and had the kids in the audience screaming for more. The acts were classic circus. Aerial butterfly, 3-man Chinese pole, flying act, foot juggling, dog act, chair balancing, high wire, phenomenal juggler, wheel act, handbalancing, and pony pictures at intermission. A couple of staged production numbers were thrown in for good measure. As you can tell by the pics, it was nonstop motion. A great time was had by all. Catch it if you can find it for some good old fashioned circus fun.

Stealthephants

Shadowy, silently, foot pads scuffling head to tail down the emptied city streets and highway. Surrounded and protected by motorcycle cops and squad cars, roped off by human escorts and accompanied by those that live with them and love them. We're here, we're interrupting the daily routine. Taking some by surprise as they pass by. What the ?!?!? Elephants are passing by. Stop everything. Call a friend, bring the kids. They're not here but once a year. Hold your horses and wonder. How is it that these giant, gentle creatures still exist? Feel the majesty and grace they bring with. In another time and place Buddha's tooth would be carried on their back. They would be honored by and for this. The politics of elephants has gotten very thick. Like magnets humans are drawn to their presence, their history, their psychic depths. Together they accommodate our wonderings. Huge, silently, with great presence they acquiesce. Nice night for meandering down darkened city streets.

Montage

Presented in the beautifully restored El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, CA, Montage, provides employment for former Cirque du Soleil artists. Individually the acts were highly skilled and creatively costumed, but the show seemed to struggle with the concepts of continuity and character development. Maybe it's just me, but I am sooooo over the "tortured" aerial artsy acts. I know personally that working in the air is painful, but the audience doesn't need to be tormented to believe it is art. The sullen looks at the audience, the posture at the end of the acts that defies you to applaud, it just seems too contrived and overdone to me. Yes, we all have angst and desire, but whatever happened to playfulness and light hearted flirtiness? Ironic that "aerial" acts bring me "down". Opening with a bit of an upbeat storyline, the curtains opened to reveal the self-supporting aerial uprights set that was used throughout the show. Very simple yet effective and efficient. The ground acts, hand balancing, contortion and juggling were presented towards the front of the stage, and the jovial nature of the high speed juggler was a breath of fresh air. I guess that instead of rehashing Soliel style, I'd love to see this show evolve to reflect the individuality of the artists true selves I could glimpse peeking out. Whoa, I guess that's not asking too much is it? A lifetime as an artist, that's all. :)

Ok, so maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this type of show. I'll admit I'm cirque'd out.

For all of $1.25 I hopped the Metro to meet Susie in N. Hollywood.
Clean, comfortable and on time it sure beat driving.

A camera inside the trailer reassures us that Susie is riding comfortably.

Next door neighbor welcomes Susie onto her front yard.
We agree not to charge for the tree trimming.

But first add your gift of a toy to the huge pile.

Greeted by loincloth clad dancers perched on rocks.

Cirque Berzerk

The latest offering in the artsy, Burning Man inspired cirque style, Cirque Berzerk, was well produced for its first time out. Appearing at the Los Angeles State Historic Park in a newly purchased white tent the weekend of shows has sold out. Featuring dancers, aerialists, and lots of fire, the choreography was creative and well rehearsed, the aerialists strong and daring, (didn't make me nervous, always a plus) and the fire, well, smoky and attention getting. The retro surreal costuming enhanced the performance and played well to the adult loft-living crowd. Music was provided by a 3-piece live band joined by a vocalist and performers doubling on percussion and backup vocals. Great to see that independent artsy live entertainment is growing in LA.
Could it be that just as animals are disappearing from the planet and circuses, fire and heat are replacing them in both places as well. Hmmm. . . Art is a reflection of life is it not?

A 22-year old female African elephant, Susie, did a remarkable job. Her trainer has spent 17 years with her and uses food as her primary motivation. Their relationship is heartwarming. At home she has an elephant companion, free range of 175 acres, a pond and plenty of forage to munch on.

The cast and crew were a pleasure to work with. Very accommodating and respectful of both the elephant and the trainer.

At the end of the shoot I got to reward her with her favorite treat, a watermelon. The action shots were captured by Mathieu whose work you can view at www.mathieuyoung.com

Lots of exciting things have been happening to and around me.
I'm trying hard to keep up and find a slideshow upload is faster.

I had the great pleasure of visiting and working with long time circus buds, Wini McKay and Chester Cable, at their vintage retro circus museum workshop sound stage aka Dortons. Having saved and collected circus props, trucks, wagons, costumes and such from the trash heap, (I donated the low wire rigging used in Barnum) they suddenly find themselves riding the wave of historical circus reinvention.
One day it's a shoot for rapper T-Pain
and his THR33 RINGZ
the next Hef's girlfriend nekked.
We sewed furiously making last-minute alterations as T-Pain had dropped weight since his last fitting. The ring master, or ring leader as his camp calls it, costumes were outrageously stunning. Several scenes were shot including one with uber star Tai the elephant, and I was impressed with the quick set changes and lighting adjustments of the director and crew. I drooled at the huge Mac monitor used to see real time pics so tweaks could be made. And, well, the camera was to die for. Geez, I thought, in the videos I've made I did it all. Oh, to have cash and a crew. . .
Had the great pleasure of meeting Selene Luna and Mighty Mike, two of the nicest people on the planet. I literally sewed Selene into her costume, luckily I had a steady hand and didn't draw blood. Cameras were banned from the set or I'd have pics.
On the train trip from Fresno to Riverside I met a young girl and she filled me in on T-Pain. Originally from Tallahassee, now Atlanta, he's got the rights to the vocoder (reminds me of the tube in the mouth gadget Joe Walsh used) and has made it his trademark. If you don't know what it is here's a cartoon that will clue you in.
